We should think about what we can learn from the 600-ship Navy as we start to plan our next defense buildup. Should we, for example, spend money on new skills to deal with the growing threat from China? And will we be able to bring these new features online on time?

The fiscal year 2022 defense budget request from the Biden administration calls for the Navy to spend the most money on combat power in decades. It also calls for the purchase of five more E-2D planes. At the moment, there are only 298 ships in the Navy, which is about a quarter of what the US needs to protect its interests.

The Navy has spent money on research and modeling to figure out how to make new ships. But these aren't quite ready to be made yet. So, the Navy is spending money on simulations, war games, and mental exercises to find out how useful these ships will be in real life.

The Navy's current force structure hasn't made enough ships to keep a strong presence in the front lines. Because of this, the size of the fleet as a whole has gone down. But working from home and being stationed elsewhere haven't done much to lessen the effect of the cut.

During the Cold War, the US sent troops to three places in the Western Pacific that were used as bases of operations. The Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam were some of these ports. In the end, the US focused on the Mediterranean as a hub for operations. But there is still a fleet of Navy ships in the Western Pacific.

There are two missions that need a lot of ships to complete. First, Distributed Maritime Operations is a key way to beat Chinese anti-access and area-denial capabilities. Second, the Navy's high-tech planes need somewhere to land. This problem could be fixed by putting out more small surface combatants.

The Navy has had some success moving ships forward in Rota, Spain, but it has not reached its goal of having 350 manned warships and 150 unmanned warships. Because of this, there aren't enough small surface combatants to go around for the next 30 years.

Unmanned maritime systems will be an important part of the team that fights wars in the future. These systems can be used for a wide range of missions, such as clearing mines, stopping traffic, and patrolling. They can also protect sailors from danger. But it's not clear right now how many of these ships the U.S. Navy will need soon.

In a recent report, the Navy's Unmanned Task Force said that the Navy's unmanned fleet is still getting better. It is a mixed force that includes both surface combatants with people on them and missile magazines that don't have people on them. This way of doing things is called "muddled Manning."

With these new ships, China now has the most ships of any country in the world. Beijing is building new warships as a way to increase its power in the region. This buildup is happening at the same time that the US is having trouble with its anti-submarine weapons.

To fight against the Chinese navy, the Navy needs to be able to balance its fleet so that it can defend itself from Chinese attacks. For that, you need a full operational fleet design. In particular, the Navy must be able to keep up with and replace the losses of a larger force, as well as train and equip officers and sailors with the right skills and training.
